Developing Future Professionals: Student Volunteer Experience at the Joint Operation Centre
Daneil Ruiters says:
Safety has never been a core function of a Municipality, so the collaboration of community services and community safety created a whole new segment. The Joint Operations Centre (JOC), established in August 2022, started with five neighbourhood watch groups whose aim was to create and provide a central location for these watch groups to not only operate but to also store any equipment. I have started a journey of volunteering as part of a leadership programme for my university and JOC was one of my choices for this opportunity. Within the time of volunteering at JOC, I have observed and gathered my own information, not only on how the JOC operates but also how each one that works there has their own unique purpose towards their department, to the operation centre and the community.
When I think about JOC, I think about the short and fruitful quote by John Mbiti- I AM BECAUSE WE ARE. JOC doesn’t only make the community a priority, it also takes their employees into consideration by providing a safe and comfortable space to work within, yet still adhering to ground rules set into place. Harold S Geneen- It is an immutable law in business that words are words, explanations are explanations, promises are promises, but only performance is reality. This is one of the best ways to describe the dynamic and effort that is put into this operation. My time at the JOC has been so educational and though provoking as a young lady, who is studying and trying to create opportunities not only for myself but for my peers and generations who will follow. I would without a doubt, recommend volunteering.
